Quick answer: Candy AI documents adult image/video generation and a paid phone feature. Character.AI is the more relevant starting point for free character storytelling and voice calls when pornography is not required: its published policy prohibits pornographic content, and neither privacy settings nor a paid plan creates a documented exception. That does not mean every adult or romantic conversation is prohibited, or that Character.AI has no visuals—it has Imagine image features. Choose the content contract first, then compare the particular media format, memory operation, free allowance and full recurring charge.
Choose the content contract before paying
Being an adult, wanting a romantic fictional character and requiring pornographic output are different things. Candy's adult-generation benefits and Character.AI's pornography rule determine one part of this comparison; they do not establish that one app is universally more intelligent, private or emotionally satisfying.

Discovery, privacy settings and continuing memory
Character.AI lets creators control whether a character or post is public or visible only to themselves. That changes who can discover the creation; it does not override content rules, establish end-to-end encryption or prove the operator cannot process a private conversation. Candy provides both a catalog and custom companion creation, so choosing Candy does not necessarily mean starting from a blank character. Character visibility FAQ, Candy plans.
For continuity, Character.AI's May memory update describes Story Memory and pins for all users; c.ai+ adds Facts that can be edited or disabled, plus fuller memory management. Its September Lite FAQ lists 15 free pins and 30 Lite pins. These are deliberate context controls, not perfect recall. Keyword-triggered Lorebooks are a separate beta tool with c.ai+ creation/editing access, rather than every fact being present in every reply. Memory update, Lite details, Lorebooks.
Candy's reviewed sources do not establish an equivalent visible editor. Do not turn that gap into a claim that its memory resets after exactly 20 messages. Before switching, record a harmless fictional book preference, correct it and check an uncued and a cued callback later. Save the actual response and the control used. A saved fact and a correctly applied fact are different observations; this is a proposed check, not our benchmark result.
Neither platform is just text: images, clips and calls
Character.AI does have generated visuals. Its March 18 Imagine Gallery announcement describes storing Imagine-generated images, generating a visual from a particular message and sharing or downloading it. The announcement's future video/comic roadmap does not prove every format is currently available in every account. More importantly, Imagine is not an exception to the pornography rule. Candy's subscription lists adult image and video generation. The public Emma Clarkson interface shows a 12-token quotation for a 5-second Scene Video and 3 tokens/minute for a beta phone call. These are that interface's displayed quotes, not verified universal debits or completed actions. A generated clip is not a live-camera conversation, and “Live Action” alone does not establish one. Character.AI distinguishes one-way Character Voice playback from two-way Calls. Its FAQ says Voice is free, Calls are available on web for all users, and call conversations have text transcripts. The same older FAQ retains mobile-only wording for the separate Voice feature, so do not collapse every voice surface into identical web availability. Free tiers and recurring costs
Character.AI publishes ongoing free unlimited messaging, not unlimited access to every premium style or generated asset. Lite supplies a daily amount of premium-style messages; after those are used, chat continues in standard styles. Lite starts at $4.99/month with regional pricing, reduces rather than eliminates ads, and provides 30 pins. c.ai+ adds unlimited premium-style chat, no ads and the fuller memory suite; check its actual current checkout price. Candy's sample is five total messages across characters, one custom character and one image—not an ongoing allowance. The public USD subscription offers a first month at $9.99, then $13.99/month, or $26.97 quarterly/$47.88 annually as term totals, with 100 monthly tokens. Illustrative usage calculation: using the quoted Candy card rates, five 5-second clips and ten minutes of calling use (5 × 12) + (10 × 3) = 90 tokens, leaving ten of a hypothetical untouched 100-token balance. This is not a media-quality result or a universal monthly cost. Any images or differently quoted actions would change it. Keep the recurring base payment and additional purchases separate.
Run a Content-Contract Fork on one must-have
A Content-Contract Fork asks the questions in an order that prevents a cheap but incompatible purchase: is the content permitted; is the required format supplied; can the necessary information be managed; and what recurring charge plus usage meter applies? These examples are hypothetical.
- Adult reader writing a non-pornographic fantasy story: Character.AI's free chat and story controls can fit. There is no reason to reject it merely because the reader is over 18. If a particular story conflicts with policy, change the premise or choose a genuinely permitted route—not a filter bypass.
- Adult buyer requiring generated explicit media: Character.AI's policy fails that requirement. Candy documents adult generation, but the action quote, required appearance and actual result still need verification. A five-message sample cannot demonstrate a month of continuity.
- Buyer requiring no automatic renewal: neither reviewed recurring subscription is the answer to that billing requirement. Staying on a suitable free tier is valid; a non-renewing gallery product is relevant only if its different media format fits.

Does paying for Character.AI remove the pornography rule?

Can Character.AI generate pictures?

No complete cross-brand import was verified. Character.AI's documented Lorebook import brings in supported world entries, with simpler keyword rules; it does not establish Candy import, conversation-history transfer or paid entitlement transfer.
